Abstract
Shanghai's municipal government along with six
other Chinese cities (Beijing, Tiajin, Wuhan,
Hangzhou & Shenzhen) are planning to build a
wireless broadband network. In Shanghai, a
wireless network covering the downtown area is
to be completed in time for the World Expo 2010.
The wireless connection is to support
high-definition video transfer and would connect
government-authorized networks in areas like
traffic control, public safety and monitoring of
the environment. China Comm has already
initiated construction of a Wi-Fi network
involving 200 – 300 base stations in Shanghai’s
Jiading New Town District. This will be one of
three major new wireless area to be built over
five years. The wireless Shanghai program also
involves a RMB 4 billion investment by Shanghai
Telecom to upgrade the city’s wireless and
broadband services. So far over 2,000 wireless
access point in public areas and Wi-Fi services
in more than 100 office building and hotels have
been established.
In this panel discussion,

project, the business use and usage models. Also
invited are industry players including carriers,
WISPs and vendors who will share their views on
their viewpoints.
