Wi-Fi for Networking, Portable Computing,
Mobile Phones, Consumer Electronics & Beyond
Hosted by the Wi-Fi Alliance
ABI Research expects Wi-Fi in non-traditional
devices to surpass networking equipment in a few years. In 2012, 1.2
billion Wi-Fi chipsets will ship, ABI estimates, and of those, 500
million will be embedded in mobile handsets. The remaining 700
million will be roughly evenly split between other consumer
electronics devices and traditional network computing equipment, the
study found. In this dynamic track hosted by the Wi-Fi Alliance,
audiences will receive a market update along with discussions about
key initiatives that will see the expansion of Wi-Fi usage,
high-impact Wi-Fi deployments in SOHO environments, role of Wi-Fi
technology is connecting communities and enabling economic
development, plus much more.
Wi-Fi has moved from enterprises, home, campuses
and public hot spots to become the technology of choice for
providing access to the Internet for entire cities or underserved
communities. This technological trend is credited for helping rural
areas overcome the digital divide enabling the faster development of
the local economy. Wi-Fi is also being used for municipal services,
emergency response and public safety agencies. WiFi is also useful
for mobile operators, Wireless service providers and systems
integrators by bringing more business through developing an urban
WiFi network economically and rapidly. In this session, the
discussion will cover the technology and technical aspect of
supporting a wide scale wireless network, the business models for
monetizing the service, the market for community wireless, examples
of current deployments around the world, and applications.
